Who is Mohammad Bin Salman: the man who controls Saudi Arabia

Who is Mohammad Bin Salman? He has been the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia since 2017. He is the current Deputy Prime Minister and he will ascend to the throne after the death of his father, 84-year-old King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. According to Bloomberg, Prince Mohammed is not yet king, but he essentially runs the country for his father.  Reminder: Saudi has a totalitarian absolute monarchy where the government is dominated by the royal family.

His critics say he is dictatorial and reckless.

His supporters (like Donald Trump) say his boldness is just what’s needed to push one of the world’s most conservative societies into the modern age.

Mohammad Bin Salman politics. MBS is kind of liberal but also committed multiple human rights violations.

  1. Liberal policies:
    • Increase the influence of Western culture.
    • Women can now own businesses and drive.
    • Crackdowns on corruption.
    • Vision 2030: this is the privatization of the economy. Less government regulation. Less dependence on oil revenue.
  2. Human rights violations:

Lavish spending. 

He has bought a $500 million yacht, a $300 million French chateau and a $450 million Leonardo da Vinci painting (the total wealth of the Saudi royal family is unknown, but it could be worth as much as $1.4 trillion).
