The conflict: Turkey, the Kurds & the U.S

Give me context… Turkey hates the Kurds & has launched a military operation against them. The Kurds are an ethnic group that has been demanding separation from Turkey (to create an independent Kurdistan) since 1978.

Where do Kurds live?

In a region in the Middle East not explicitly delimited. It is divided between Turkey, Iran, Irak and Syria.

Btw… the US loves Kurds.

They were allies and were key to defeating the Islamic State (IS) in Syria. The Kurds also gained control of territory in northeastern Syria. But Turkey sees them as a terror threat.

The problem. Kurdish forces have to now drop operations against ISIS to focus on fighting the Turkish.

What is Trump is saying?

I will get my troops out of Syria and I won’t attack Turkey. I don’t want to get involved in this mess, but “I will ‘wipe out’ Turkey’s economy if it takes out Syrian Kurds.

So what now?

  1. Many have criticized Trump for abandoning the Kurds by withdrawing U.S troops.
  2. At least 10 Syrian civilians have been killed.
  3. There are concerns that the Turkish assault risks undermining the progress that has been made against ISIS.
