Donald Trump ends the war in Afghanistan! The war in Afghanistan, explained

The story. After long negotiations, Donald Trump and the Taliban struck a deal paving the withdrawal of US forces in Afghanistan and ending America’s more than 18-year war there.

Who are the Taliban?

The Taliban is a terrorist organization. It aims to enforce in Afghanistan a society based on the strict interpretation of Islam. Until 2001, the Taliban controlled most of Afghanistan, where they killed civilians, tortured women, and so on.

The U.S invasion of Afghanistan: the beginning of the war.

Following the September 11 attacks, the US invaded Afghanistan (2001) and drove the Taliban from power in order to deny al-Qaeda a safe base of operations in Afghanistan.

Reminder. Al-Qaeda is the terrorist group that was responsible of the 9/11 attacks. Osama bin Laden (al-Qaeda’s leader) and the Taliban were allies.

The war has since mostly involved US and allied Afghan government troops battling Taliban insurgents.

Today. The new peace deal.

The US will pull out its troops from Afghanistan. The Taliban has to fulfill its end of the bargain, including cutting ties with terror groups like al-Qaeda.
