Revolution in France: the Yellow Vests

Give me some context… French President Emmanuel Macron said that in 2019, fuel taxes will be increase, particularly on diesel to fight climate change. As a result, mass violent demonstrations began on 17 November 2018. This movement was called the “yellow jackets movement” because protesters wear fluorescent vests as a symbol (vehicle-related).

Btw..73% of French people support the movement and Marine Le Pen (far-right party leader) & opposition leaders encouraged demonstrations.

But what do protesters want?

  1. Lower fuel taxes – the price of diesel has risen 23% in the past 12 months.
  2. A tax for the wealthiest- on people having assets in excess of 1,300,000 €.
  3. A minimum wage increase
  4. Macron’s resignation – the working class feel marginalized. They think he only helps the rich.
  5. Improved government services for rural areas.

 Are the protests over?

Not entirely… but the number of demonstrations has dropped significantly. For that, Macron had to renounce to the increase in fuel taxes and announced several social measures. He promised that most would see an effective increase in the minimum wage of 100€ per month by 2019.

Attention! 10 people died and at least 750 were injured during the demonstrations.
