The new Israel government, explained

F***ing finally. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his opponent Benny agreed to form a unity government. Reminder: the country has held 3 elections in less than a year, leaving the country on the brink of a fourth election. This is because no one got the majority of the votes.

How the new government will work.

Netanyahu (right-wing party) will be PM for the next 18 months. After that, Benny Gantz (centrist party) will take over. However, given Netanyahu’s political cunning, Israeli analysts are skeptical that he would hand over power when the time comes. Reminder: He has been 10 years in power and it doesn’t look like he wants to give it away.

The problem.

Under the deal, Netanyahu could move ahead with annexing parts of the West Bank (Palestinian territory), which eliminates any possibility of achieving peace between the two.

Israel and Palestine have been fighting for the same land for ages, and Netanyahu wants the complete disappearance of Palestine.

Btw… Netanyahu is indicted on charges of bribery (to newspapers) and corruption. He’ll remain in office while his corruption trial starts to play out next month (something that goes in favor). Israel new government
