The story. Prince Harry and wife Meghan (American actress) announced they are stepping away from their duties as senior members of the British royal family and will split their time between the UK and North America. In a surprise statement on Instagram, the couple said they want to work toward becoming “financially independent” and launch a new charitable entity.
Why would they do that?
Media coverage of the couple, particularly of Meghan, has been brutal at times. It’s been suggested that the couple decided on the move because a life living in that kind of environment would not be good for them or their son. Prince Harry has described his mental health as a matter of “constant management”.
What did the royal family say?
Buckingham Palace said discussions about the move were at “an early stage,” while reports claimed no royal family member was consulted prior to the announcement. Later, Queen Elizabeth II said that she’s “entirely supportive” of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s desire to “create a new life as a young family.” But she still would’ve preferred them to remain “full-time” working members of the royal family.
