Iran-US tensions: Will Soleimani killing spark war?

Give me context... The US killed (ordered by President Trump) one of Iran’s most powerful leaders, Qasem Soleimani. He was the head of Iran’s Quds Force and responsible for hundreds of American deaths. The murder comes after the siege of the US Embassy in Iraq, Baghdad.

What’s Iran’s Quds Force?

It is a military group that works outside of Iran’s borders and reports directly to the ayatollah (supreme leader of Iran). Qasem Soleimani was its leader and he was hailed as a heroic national figure.

A terrorist group?

According to the U.S, the Quds Force is a terrorist group and its Iran’s primary mechanism for cultivating and supporting terrorist groups across the Middle East.

What did Qasem do?

  1. He helped prop up Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Reminder: the US, France, the UK, Turkey and the Arab League want to overthrow al-Assad in Syria (China, Russia, Venezuela, North Korea and Iran support him).
  2. Provided support to Hezbollah (terrorist group in Lebanon). The group aims to spread Islamic Revolution. We explained you the conflict here.
  3. Trained Islamic revolutionary groups around the Middle East.

What have others said about the US attack?

Iran: the US “bears responsibility for all consequences of its rogue adventurism”.

Russia: the attack was a “murder” & a “reckless step” by the US.

Iraq: The “assassination” is an escalation of regional tensions.

What now? Although the US and Iran already hated each other, Qasem’s death is bringing US-Iran tensions to a fever pitch.
