Give me context… The Summit is the global meeting on climate change. Nearly 200 UN member countries participate. This year it is held in Madrid from 2-13 December.
All you need to know about the 2019 Summit.
- The Summit will discuss how to implement the Paris Agreement. In the Agreement, 195 countries have pledged to adopt measures to limit the amount of greenhouse gases emissions in the atmosphere (i.e by using renewable energy sources). Also, under the agreement, developed countries need to give $100 billion a year as an aid to developing countries for action on climate change.
- The U.S. Trump is not attending the summit and announced that the U.S is leaving the Paris Agreement.
- China. Russia. India. It doesn’t look like China or Russia are going to increase its greenhouse gas cutting plans. India’s PM didn’t show up at the Summit (although it’s the 3rd most contaminated country in the world).
- Europe. The EU Commission has announced an ambitious plan at European level to curb greenhouse gas emissions.
PS: Young Swedish climate activist, Greta Thunberg, arrived in Lisbon after 3 weeks crossing the Atlantic on a catamaran. In Lisbon she took the train to make a 10 hour trip to Madrid. She refuses to travel by plane because of the impact it has on the environment.
Yes. She was late to the Summit!
